I'd like to commission a sign or sign suite. How do we get started? Thanks for the interest! The process for chalkboards is a little different from calligraphy, since each piece is an original, one-of-a-kind design:
First thing is to contact me and share as much information about your ideas as possible - deadline, size, style, text, theme, and of course whether it will be a mural or an individual board. Feel free to ask about matching your wedding or brand colors, or incorporating your logo. Every project is different, and we'll chat back and forth - over email, phone, or if you're local, coffee - until the vision is clear.
Then, a 50% non-refundable retainer confirms your order and secures your spot on my calendar.
After that, I'll take to my sketchbook and draw up a sketch of your sign, making decisions about the layout, lettering style, and any illustrations to be included. You can expect to see your sketch(es) by email within 7-10 days of making your deposit. One round of revisions is included; additional revisions may incur a $25 fee per round.
When you are happy with the design, I will send a refined drawing that acts as a final proof for you to approve, and I can begin on your order.
Can you do a quick sign for a party this weekend?
I'm familiar with last minute craziness. In the off-chance I have an open spot in my calendar, I'd love to help you out if I can. Please provide all the details you can about size of your board, design inspiration, and the content HERE, and I'll let you know ASAP if I can take it on. (Please title your email - Attn: Brooke - RUSH SIGN)
How do you make sure the sign doesn't smudge?
Regular old-school chalk & chalk pastels are my favorite medium of all: they can't be beat for brightness, sharpness of line, and ability to create all sorts of different textures on the board. Great for temporary signs, rental boards, or for pieces that aren't likely to be touched.
For a more smudge-free option, I can also work with oil pastels.
Chalk markers will be used upon request, for the plastic chalk boards from Hobby Lobby or the like (as regular chalk will not write on that kind of surface), and for Mirrored signs.
If I'm ordering a sign, who provides it - me or you?
